Spinosad is a natural substance made by a soil bacterium that can be toxic to insects and has been granted organic status by the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) in 2003. However few farmers and home gardeners are aware of its potential uses. Spinosad is especially effective on caterpillars and thrips.
Spinosad is used to control a wide variety of pests including thrips, leafminers, spider mites, and many others. It is a broad-spectrum insecticide that is highly active, by both contact and ingestion, in numerous insect species. It has a novel mode of action which helps prevent cross-resistance with organophosphates and carbamates. Sponosad has a short pre-harvest interval, which refers to the minimum number of days that must pass between the last application of a pesticide and the harvest of the crop. This characteristic is beneficial for farmers as it allows them to effectively control pests close to harvest without prolonged waiting periods. Its mode of action is different from conventional insecticides, making it an effective tool in managing pest resistance. Its unique mechanism targets specific receptors in insects, reducing the likelihood of pests developing resistance over time.
Stored grains: Spinosad has been fully labeled in the United States for use on stored wheat, maize, sorghum, barley, oats, rice and millet.
Vegetables: It can be used on all vegetables including tomato, pepper, brinjal, leafy greens, groundnut, potatoes, onions, ginger, and turmeric.
Fruits: It can be used on all fruit trees including apples, nut trees, citrus, bananas, papaya, guava and mango.
Ornamentals: Spinosad can be used on ornamentals, including trees, shrubs, and lawns.
Other crops: It can also be used on other crops, including herbs, cotton, tea, and sunflower. It can be applied to most food crops up to 1 day before harvest.
